Sephardi Jews, Mizrahi Jews, and other Jewish ethnic divisions.

The Jews in Central Europe (1881)

Ashkenazi Jews, also known as Ashkenazic Jews or Ashkenazim (Hebrew: אַשְׁכֲּנָזִים‎, pronounced [ˌaʃkəˈnazim], singular: [ˌaʃkəˈnazi]; also יְהוּדֵי אַשְׁכֲּנָז, Yehudei Ashkenaz, "the Jews of Ashkenaz"), are the Jews descended from the medieval Jewish communities along the Rhine in Germany from Alsace in the south to the Rhineland in the north. Ashkenaz is the medieval Hebrew name for this region and thus for Germany. Thus, Ashkenazim or Ashkenazi Jews are literally "German Jews." Later, Jews from Western and Central Europe came to be called "Ashkenaz" because the main centers of Jewish learning were located in Germany. (See Usage of the name for the term's etymology.) Ashkenaz is also a Japhetic patriarch in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10).

Many Ashkenazi Jews later migrated, largely eastward, forming communities in non German-speaking areas, including Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere between the 11th and 19th centuries. With them, they took and diversified Yiddish, a basically Germanic language with Hebrew influence (see Jewish language). It had developed in medieval times as the lingua franca among Ashkenazi Jews. The Jewish communities of three cities along the Rhine: Speyer, Worms and Mainz, created the SHUM league (SHUM after the first Hebrew letters of Spira, Warmatia and Magentza). The SHUM-cities are considered the cradle of the distinct Ashkenazi culture and liturgy.

Although in the 11th century, they comprised only 3 percent of the world's Jewish population, at their peak in 1931, Ashkenazi Jews accounted for 92 percent of the world's Jews. Today they make up approximately 80 percent of Jews worldwide. Most Jewish communities with extended histories in Europe are Ashkenazim, with the exception of those associated with the Mediterranean region. The majority of the Jews who migrated from Europe to other continents in the past two centuries are Ashkenazim, Eastern Ashkenazim in particular. This is especially true in the United States, where most of the 5.3 million American Jewish population is Ashkenazi, representing the world's single largest concentration of Ashkenazim.

Is it true that Ashkenazi Jews are at a greater risk of genetic diseases?
Q. My fiance and I are both of Ashkenazi ancestry (I'm only 1/4 but he is 100%) and his mother keeps telling me that we should get genetic counseling and all this stuff before having kids. However my mother says that it's just a myth because we've been studied more than other groups so they've identified more genetic diseases.

A. Yes, there are several genetic diseases that affect certain ancestries, his mom is correct (much like sickle cells effects blacks). Tay-Sachs is one disease, Familial Mediterranean Fever may be another, as may thalassemia. If none have turned up in the family pedigree, it is most likely no one is a carrier; so your risks are small.

How do Sephardic Jews and Ashkenazi Jews differ?
Q. What are the difference in the 2?
Asked by H.Hero - Fri Oct 19 20:31:28 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sephardi and Ashekenazi Jewry are practically identical. With regards actual Jewish law itself, there is no difference between the two. However, as the two Jewish cultures grew up in near total separation from each other, customs are different between the two groups. The two classic examples are Slichot, repentance prayers, and legumes on Passover. Followers of classic Ashkenazi custom begin the repentance prayers towards the beginning of the New Year and refrain from eating legumes on Passover, while Sepharadim start the repentance prayers a month before the New Year and freely eat legumes on Passover. There are other slight differences, such as Ashkenazim naming children after relatives who have passed on while Sepharadim name them after… [cont.]

Question for Ashkenazi Jews and Jewish Israelis?
Q. Can you tell the difference between an Iranian Jew and an Arab? I am an Iranian Jew and I am going to visit Israel for a while. If I go there, will everyone think I am an Arab? My skin is rather dark, and I am somewhat reluctant to go there because I read something about Middle Eastern Jews discriminated against because people think that they're Arabs.

A. Mordechai, I am a Persian Jew who was born in Israel. It is true that there is some discrimination -- but believe me the situation is not so bad. Some 45%-50% of Israeli Jews are actually descended of Middle Eastern Jews from countries such as Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, etc. so it is not unusual for Israelis to have dark skin. You will likely be discriminated against more for being timid than for being dark-skinned. Stand up tall, be proud, and enjoy yourself. Israel is a fantastic place, and though some of the people might seem a little rude, dont forget that its a different culture and it takes time to get used to it. Don't let it bring you down -- and for the love of God don't be afraid to go! This is your homeland… [cont.]
